Jagir Kaur banking on Langah case verdict for stay on conviction

CHANDIGARH: Nearly five years after she was convicted in Harpreet’s abduction case, Jagir Kaur’s counsel relied on SC judgment in Sucha Singh Langah case to seek stay on her conviction.

Chandigarh, January 11

Nearly five years after she was convicted in Harpreet’s abduction case, Jagir Kaur’s counsel relied on SC judgment in Sucha Singh Langah case to seek stay on her conviction. The case will now come up for further hearing before the Punjab and Haryana HC on Thursday.

The Supreme Court had stayed SAD leader and former Punjab minister Sucha Singh Langah’s conviction in a disproportionate assets case. As the case came up for hearing before the Bench of Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal and Justice Ramendra Jain, senior advocate JS Bedi referred to the SC order. The development is significant as the outcome of the plea has the potential of affecting Bibi’s political fate as stay on conviction is apparently essential for contesting the elections.

Bibi and others were sentenced to five years for offences ranging from “causing miscarriage without the woman’s consent” to criminal conspiracy. The trial court in her case had held: “The prosecution has been able to prove that accused Dalwinder Kaur Dhesi, Paramjit Singh Raipur and Nishan Singh abducted Harpreet Kaur by deceitful means.”

Dhesi was Bibi’s “trusted friend” and related to Paramjit Singh Raipur, who was Jagir Kaur’s political confidant. — TNS
