Chandigarh, January 19

Despite a notification issued by the UT Administration restricting the use of the red beacon on official cars, including that of the UT IGP, the officer continues to use the beacon on his car.

The UT police had sent a communication to the Chandigarh Administration citing a Supreme Court ruling allowing the red beacon atop police vehicles. The UT DIG and the SSP (Traffic) have only covered the red beacon instead of removing it.

The UT had a come up with a notification around a week ago authorising the UT Administrator, Judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the Adviser to the Administrator to use the red beacon with a flasher on their vehicles.

The official vehicle of UT IGP TS Luthra was seen with the red beacon at Sukhna Lake today during a walkathon organised as part of Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight — Saksham, 2017.

Despite repeated attempts, the UT IGP could not be contacted for comments.

The notification says the MP, the Mayor, IAS/IPS officers of the super-time scale and above the rank of DC/District Magistrate, the District and Sessions Judge, the SSP and fire tenders are allowed to use the amber light (with a flasher).
