SMJN College athletes win medals

Two students of Shravan Nath Math Jawaharlal Nehru College brought laurels to the college by bagging a silver and bronze medal at the just concluded Inter College Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University Athletic Meet.

Two students of Shravan Nath Math Jawaharlal Nehru College brought laurels to the college by bagging a silver and bronze medal at the just concluded Inter College Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University Athletic Meet.

Held at Dehradun-based Maharana Pratap Sports Hostel ground, Ishwar Tiwari (B.Com) won a silver medal in hammer throw. Anukur Chauhan (BA) bagged a bronze medal in the 100 metre race.

A grand reception was given to both the winners here today at the college premises by the college management and students.

College principal Dr Avneet Kumar Ghildiyal said that sports needed to be made an integral part of the student life, as it makes them mentally and physically stronger to face the outside world that awaits them after college life.

Commerce department in charge Sunil Kumar Batra said that sports and participation in physical activities were a must, particularly in today’s life when youths were getting addicted to mobile and computer games.

Sports and cultural activity coordinator AK Maheshwari said sportsmen and women of the state had immense talent.

Maheshwari, citing examples of Bachendri Pal, Jaspal Rana, Madhhumita Bisht, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Parimarjan Negi, Manish Pandey, Ekta Bisht, Manisht Maithani, Jatin Singh, said that despite less resources and infrastructure, sportspersons from Uttarakhand are making a name at the national and international levels.

Coach Rajendra Nautiyal expressed satisfaction over the eight-member squad of the college, which participated in the athletic meet that comprised Abhay Purohit, Madhur Aneja, Shubham Sharma, Manveer Singh Rawat, Sobhit Dyani and Sumit Nautiyal.

He pointed that last year too the team had bagged a silver and bronze medal in boxing, while before that one medal each in boxing and judo was clinched by college participants.
