Srinagar, March 8

The Social Royal Voluntary Environmental Service, a social workers group, on International Women’s Day expressed concern over the increasing rate of crime against women in J&K.

Idrees-ul-Haq Beigh, convener of SRVES, said, “The cases of acid attack, molestation and eve teasing have increased and the state stands at 13th in the country as far as the number of rape cases are concerned.”

“In 2001, the number of rape cases reported in Jammu and Kashmir were 169, which in 2013 crossed 378 and in 2015 as far as our preliminary study is concerned it will cross 413 mark which shows an unprecedented increase in the violence against women in the state,” said Beigh.

He said negligible efforts were made to implement the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, which was passed in 2010. “More than 600 cases of conjugal violence are registered every year. Worst of the cases include mental and physical torture, beating at the hands of in-laws and there are many cases which remain unreported,” he added. — TNS
