Sterilised stray dogs may get reflective collars

CHANDIGARH: While the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has failed to check the stray dog menace in the city, a two-member committee of the MC, formed to keep an eye on the sterilisation programme, has recommended reflective collars for sterilised stray dogs and a joint sterilisation drive by the MCs of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali.

Chandigarh, April 24

While the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has failed to check the stray dog menace in the city, a two-member committee of the MC, formed to keep an eye on the sterilisation programme, has recommended reflective collars for sterilised stray dogs and a joint sterilisation drive by the MCs of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali.

The committee comprises BJP councillor Rajesh Kalia and Indpendent councillor Daleep Sharma.

Kalia said at present, there was a practice of making a cut on an ear of each sterilised dog to differentiate it from other stray dogs.

He said there should be a reflective collar on the neck of stray dogs, which could easily be seen by residents as well.

“There are around 15-20 stray dogs in my locality, but I am not able to differentiate which one is sterilised and which one is not,” Kalia said.

The other committee member, Daleep Sharma, said the committee had recommended a joint sterilisation drive by the Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali MCs to make it more effective. The committee would place these recommendations before the MC House on April 28, he said.
