Srinagar, August 3

Minister for Education Naeem Akhtar has said the government was making efforts to rationalise student-teacher ratio in government schools across the state.

He said this while visiting government schools in various areas of Srinagar city today.

During the inspection of schools in the Gulabbagh area, it was found that there were three government schools located in the same vicinity. In Government High School (Boys) Gulabbagh, there were 40 students with 17 teachers, while two other schools, including Government Girls High School and a primary school, also located in the same area, had disproportionate student-teacher ratio.

Observing irrational student-teacher ratio in the schools and also after consulting community leaders, the minister said the three schools would be merged into a single school with better infrastructure.

He also visited Middle School at Zakura with 64 students. The school has a good building but also houses an independent primary school within it having two teachers and 19 students. The minister gave on the spot instructions to merge the two schools, saying that the merger would help the students avail better infrastructural facilities and resources.

He said another incomplete school building in the same area, which was coming up under the SSA, would be completed and put to appropriate use.

Meanwhile, the minister also visited Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Khanyar, and appreciated good number of students on rolls. He announced a computer lab and a smart class for the school besides construction of additional classrooms and introduction of various vocational subjects.
