Foreign dreams turned sour for a 29-year-old woman from Phillaur who married a deaf-mute NRI from the US hoping to change the destiny of her two younger brothers.

The family even claimed to have paid Rs 8 lakh on the pretext of sending the woman and her two brothers to the US, but the girl was dumped within a week of her marriage that was held on March 16.

According to Akwinder Kaur of Daduwal village, she was introduced to groom Bhupinder Singh’s family by Harnek Singh, a family friend. “We were told that the boy could not speak but is from a well-to-do family. He owns malls in the US and will also take my entire family there,” she claimed.

“I tried to adjust with the family, but a week after they dropped me at my parent’s home and left for the US,” she claimed. When she tried to contact them, she was abused by her father-in-law Atma Singh.

Later, she also came to know that Bhupinder Singh was earlier married to Tejinder Kaur from Barapind village in Phillaur.

She alleged that despite repeated requests, the Phillaur police were not registering an FIR as local Akali leader Amarjit Singh Sandhu, Chairman Market Committee, Goraya, was intervening in the matter to save Harnek Singh.

Sandhu, however, said the girl approached him on Facebook around six months ago. “She requested me to help her in getting a criminal case registered against her in-laws. I sent her to the police and asked her to lodge an FIR,” said Sandhu.

However, Sandhu said though Harnek Singh tried to get a compromise done between the girl and the groom’s family, Akwinder demanded Rs 40 lakh.

“While the groom was ready to pay only Rs 2 to 3 lakh, the bride’s family demanded Rs 40 lakh and even threatened to register an FIR,” said Sandhu.
