A feeling of despair and sorrow gripped the villagers here after the news of BSF Head Constable Chanderbhan Verma’s death in Kashmir came this morning.

However, confusion prevailed among the family members on how the trooper died.

The aggrieved family claimed they were telephonically informed by the BSF authorities that Chanderbhan, 40, was killed after terrorists targeted a BSF camp at Bandipora district last night.

“We got a message that Chander sustained 10 bullets and he died instantly. He was a brave soldier and a caring family man,” said Amrit Verma, elder brother of the deceased.

According to the media reports from Jammu and Kashmir, Chanderbhan was allegedly shot by his colleague following a heated argument, but the district authorities here refused to confirm this.

Sumedha Kataria, Kurukshetra Deputy Commissioner, told The Tribune that she got a communication from the BSF authorities stating Chanderbhan was found injured in the BSF camp in Bandipura district.

Later he was declared dead by the doctors at the army hospital, said the DC.

The deceased is survived by his wife Bina Devi and two children, a son who studies in Class XI and a daughter who is in Class V.

His father, Harichand Verma, had retired from the BSF. The deceased’s younger brother Ajay Verma is also in the paramilitary force and posted in Gujarat for election duty.

Ajay had left Gujarat to attend the funeral of his brother.

The deceased’s body is expected to reach Kirmach on Wednesday, said the family.
