Nearly 75 years after attaining martyrdom during World War-II, the ashes of Sepoy Palu Ram of the 4th Battalion of the 13th Frontier Force Rifles under the British Indian Army were brought to his native village Nangthala here on Monday.

Capt Pradeep Bali (retd) from the Zila Sainik Board accompanied an Army team from Delhi to Nangthala village and handed over the remains of the slain soldier to his brother’s grandson Ramesh Koth. SDM Paramjit Chahal was also present on the occasion.

Captain Bali said Sepoy Palu Ram went missing while fighting the German Infantry division at Poggio Alto in Italy on September 13, 1944.

“I received a message from the Army to locate Palu Ram’s family. I contacted one Leela Ram, who led me to the family of Ramesh, son of Ramji Lal. Ramji Lal is the son of Palu Ram’s brother Mauji Ram,” he said.

Ramesh said he was taken by surprise when Army officials contacted him to enquire about Palu Ram. He said his great grandfather had been getting pension for Palu Ram.
