The five-day-old stalemate between local lawyers and the police ended today with the intervention of senior lawyers from other districts.

SP B. Satheesh Balan had a meeting with the lawyers this afternoon and later sent Surender Kumar, SHO of Jhajjar police station, to the Police Lines with immediate effect. He assured them of arresting other persons accused of assaulting advocate Roshan Lal Yadav.

The SP also assured the lawyers of apprising the DGP about their demand for the suspension of DSP Rajeev Kumar. Thereafter, the lawyers called off their agitation. However, they threatened to resume it if action is not taken against the DSP within a week.

Sources said the police had booked former councillor Santram Gurjar, his brother Jagbir Gurjar and two others under Sections 148 (Rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149, 323 (causing hurt), 452 (house trespass) and 506 (criminal intimidation) in connection with the attack on advocate Roshan Lal Yadav on August 22. While Gurjar brothers have been arrested, two others are still at large.

“A group of lawyers went to DSP Rajeev’s office last week to seek the arrest of other accused but the DSP and SHO Surender Kumar misbehaved with them in the presence of those who had come in the support of Gurjars. Hence, we are demanding the suspension of the DSP and the SHO,” said Devender Kadian, president of the District Bar Association, Jhajjar.

Kadian said the SP assured them of apprising the DGP of their demand for the DSP’s suspension, as he has no power to take such action. “We want action against the DSP and will not hesitate from resuming the agitation if the DSP is not punished within a week,” he added.
