The Directorate of School Education has banned teachers in government schools across the state from carrying cellphones to classrooms. They will have to take prior permission of the school heads if they need to carry the phone to the class as an academic aid or for any other reason, which they need to mention in a special register.

Inspecting officers have been asked to check compliance. In case of any violation, action will be taken against the erring teacher. The school head too will be held accountable.

“The mobile phone shall be kept stashed away in maybe the room of the school head, staff room...,” state the guidelines.

“To facilitate emergency communication, it shall be ensured that the school head shall make available two contact numbers to all teachers.” School heads too have been barred from carrying cellphones to classrooms.

The use of mobiles during non-teaching hours will be confined to an area away from the classes. The guidelines come following complaints that teachers carry phones for personal use, that “amounts to diverting teaching hours to  purposes which are unproductive”.
