Yamunanagar and Jagadhri towns continue to grapple with the parking problem, as the Municipal Corporation has done precious little to find a solution.

Be it the Railway road, Jagadhri workshop road, Madhu hotel to Kanhaiya Sahib Chowk road, Chhoti Line area of Yamunanagar or the Pyara Chowk-Nehru Park road, all these stretches in Yamunanagar city are always teeming with vehicular traffic, leading to constant snarls.

People say that the parking problem is the main reason behind traffic jams in Yamunanagar. In the absence of established parking lots, they are forced to park their vehicles on roads, hindering the smooth movement of traffic.

“The problem has emerged as the owners of commercial buildings have made no arrangements for parking of vehicles. Besides, the Municipal Corporation has never paid attention to establishing parking lots in the two towns,” says Satpal Kaushik, a Congress leader and resident of Sector 17, HUDA.

There are a number of commercial and non-commercial establishments such as banks, restaurants, sweet shops, hospitals, educational institutions, coaching centres and salons that are visited by people who park their vehicles on roads in front of these buildings, adding to traffic snarls.

“It is difficult to drive on the Radaur road, Railway road, Fountain Chowk road, Pyara Chowk road, Madhu hotel-Kanhaiya Sahib Chowk road, Nehru Park road, Fountain Chowk-Yamunanagar bus stand road and the workshop road of Yamunanagar town as commuters park their vehicles on pavements and roads in the absence of authorised parking spaces,” adds Kaushik.

Deepak Kumar, a resident of the Camp area, says that a number of commercial vehicles load and unload goods on the crowded Radaur road of Yamunanagar every day.

“The Traffic police should regulate the movement of commercial vehicles on the Radaur road and challan them if found parked haphazardly on roads,” says Deepak.

Jai Chand Chauhan, a Jagadhri resident and president of Haryana Bhrashtachar Virodhi Morcha, says that Jagadhri town too faces the problem of parking.

He says that Buria Chungi, Khera Bazaar, Pathro Wala Bazaar, Bartan Bazaar, areas near Jagadhri bus stand, Chhoti Line area and the road from Matka Chowk to Sector 17 are some of the places in Jagadhri which are prone to traffic jams, as people park their vehicles on roads.

He says that vehicles parked in unauthorised places are not safe and several two-wheelers and bicycles are stolen every year in the absence of security guards.

Rinku, a resident of Farakpur, says that frequent arguments and fights over vehicle parking are becoming common. The Municipal Corporation has failed in providing a wholesome solution to the problem.

Kaushik says that the Municipal Corporation should identify spots and develop multi-level parking close to crowded bazaars.

“The Municipal Corporation doesn’t have enough land in bazaars, thus it should take land on lease from private persons to solve the problem of parking,” says Kaushik.

Madan Chauhan, Mayor, says that solving the problem is his top priority and he will soon take bold steps in this regard. “We shall soon identify suitable places to develop parking lots in Yamunanagar and Jagadhri. Besides, we shall use some other methods also to tackle the problem,” he adds.
