An unidentified youth threw acid on a 19-year-old migrant girl at Kripalpur village in the Nalagarh industrial area last evening, causing severe burn injuries on her face and left arm.

DSP, Nalagarh, Chaman Lal said the girl, who works in a bulb manufacturing unit at Kripalpur, left her unit around 6:30 pm and was going to help her mother, who works at another unit located nearby. She took her younger sister along.

They both were going towards their rented accommodation when an unidentified youth, who was wearing a black jacket and had covered his head with a cap, came from the opposite side. He first walked past the duo, then turned and caught her from behind and threw acid on her face.

The girl tried to cover her face with her dupatta but the acid splashed on her left arm causing severe burn injuries. The youth fled after throwing the acid.

She was rushed to the nearby referral unit at Nalagarh by her parents. After she was given preliminary treatment, she was referred to the PGI Chandigarh as there is no skin specialist in the hospital. Her condition was stated to be stable.

The family comprising her parents, three brothers and four sisters have been residing at Kripalpur village for the last nine months in a rented accommodation. They hail from UP.

The DSP said two disposable glasses and a 250 ml bottle of sauce, used to carry acid, were collected by the police and sent for lab analysis to ascertain which chemical has been used in the crime.

Acid can’t be sold without proper verification. However, this being an industrial area, it was not difficult to procure it as it is used in various industrial processes. Since there was no CCTV in the area where the crime took place, the police were yet to identify the culprit.

A case under Section 326 of the IPC has been registered and further investigations were underway.

Culprit yet to be identified
