Urban Development Minister Sarveen Chaudhary on Thursday gave in-principle approval to the expansion of the Kangra Municipal Council limit in order to provide better facilities to those living in suburbs.

The minister asked MC chief Ashok Sharma to pass a resolution in this regard so that the Cabinet could also approve the proposal.

The minister was addressing a press conference at the PWD rest house after inaugurating a domestic hazardous waste kiosk and segregated garbage collection centre near the Civil Hospital.

She said it was the first-of-its-kind centre in the state. While wet garbage would be collected at the centre for six days, dry garbage would be collected only for one day.

The garbage and domestic hazardous waste would be segregated and scientifically disposed of. Six types of dustbins would be available at the Centre.

The minister said the MC had set up the centre in collaboration with the Pollution Control Board.

Dr RK Pruthi, Director, Urban Development Department, said an MOU had been signed between the Kangra Municipal Council and the Pollution Control Board to dispose of the garbage under the PPP mode. From dry garbage, interlocking tiles would be made.

The minister said advanced and modern machinery would be installed at the centre. Residential quarters would also be constructed for the staff.

The minister said steps would be taken to collect garbage from rural areas as well.
