Two councillors of the Manali Municipal Committee, who had recently shifted to the BJP from the Congress, were elected as the president and vice-president of the Manali MC on Wednesday.

Earlier, there were only two BJP councillors from seven wards of Manali town, but after Nina Thakur and Anita Sood joined the BJP, the strength of the BJP -supported candidates increased.

Congress-supported president Shabnam Tanwar and vice-president Joginder Pal had already resigned from their posts after the BJP councillors demanded no-confidence motion to change the president and vice-president of the Manali MC.

The Congress-backed councillors had decided to share the term of office of the president for two-and-half-years each, but even after the passage of three years, Shabnam Tanwar did not vacate her post. The BJP cashed in on the opening and lured the two Congress-backed councillors to join the BJP and offered them the posts of president and vice-president.

Nina Thakur was appointed as the new president and Anita Sood as the vice-president. They took out a rally on the Mall road after the Congress-backed Manali MC was taken over by the BJP.
