Army jawan, militant killed in gunfight in Kulgam

SRINAGAR: An Army jawan and a militant were killed and another securityman was wounded in an ongoing gunfight in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Tuesday, sources said.

An Army jawan and a militant were killed and another securityman was wounded in an ongoing gunfight in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Tuesday, sources said.

The gunfight erupted in Qazigund Kulgam, 75 km from here when joint teams of police, army and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation at Nowbug Kund village in the morning.

“Cordon and search turned into an encounter and in the gunfight we lost a soldier. Another securityman has been wounded in the gunfight,” an official said, adding that the operation was still in progress.  

Sources said the operation was launched by the forces after an input that two militants were hiding in the area. There are reports of intense clashes around the encounter site.

Another gunfight broke in Tral sub-district in south Kashmir on Tuesday morning, when forces launched an anti-militancy operation.

Police said the encounter broke at Laam Tral forest, 60 km from here, when security forces were carrying out search operation in the area.

On Monday evening, two local militants of Hizbul Mujahideen--Ashiq Bhat of Palhalan Pattan and Toib Mir of Brathkalan Sopore--were killed after they attacked a joint party of police, Army and CRPF in north Kashmir’s Handwara area.
