Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has credited the surrender of 20-year-old footballer Majid Khan, who joined the Lashkar-e-Toiba last week, to his mother, saying that it was a mother’s love that prevailed and helped him come back home.

“A mother’s love prevailed. Her impassioned appeal helped in getting Majid, an aspiring footballer, back home. Every time a youngster resorts to violence, it is his family which suffers the most,” Mehbooba wrote on Twitter after Majid surrendered before security forces.

In another tweet, the Chief Minister said: “I understand the predicament of young boys who have strayed into militancy. Most realise the futility of senseless violence and want to return home and live normal lives with dignity.”

“The choice to renounce violence is not an easy one and they find themselves between the devil and the deep blue sea. The fear of social stigma clouds their judgement,” she added. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also welcomed Majid’s surrender and hoped that he would not be harassed by the security agencies.

“If that’s true then it’s a very good development. Hope he can go back to leading a normal life and not be harassed,” Omar wrote.

Majid surrendered before the Army around 10:30 pm on Thursday. Majid’s mother Ayesha had implored her son to return. “I want my only son back... Majid, come back…..” she had appealed to her son through media.

DGP appeals to all mothers

Director General of Police SP Vaid said the mothers of all youths who have picked up the gun should appeal to their sons to shun the path of violence. “I pray that wisdom prevails and all such mothers whose sons have picked up guns also appeal to their sons to give up the path of violence and come back home,” the DGP said.
