Jalandhar, September 3

Students of DAV College, Jalandhar, on Tuesday organised a national-level round of the 15th National Youth Parliament competition. Their performance was judged by a jury of three judges — Bratin Sengupta, ex-MP (Rajya Sabha) AB Acharya, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Government of India, New Delhi; and Neeru Sharma, Principal, Pt. Mohan Lal SD College for Women, Gurdaspur.

Aspiring to join the tally of top seven teams from all over the country, that are scheduled to perform the last round in Delhi, 55 students participated in the national-level round today and successfully tried to create the ambience of actual Parliament House. Sponsored by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Government of India, under the Scheme of National Youth Parliament Competition in Universities and Colleges throughout the country, the event was managed and conducted by the Department of Political Science. The seating arrangement was made as per the provisions of Parliament.

Students portrayed the roles of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, PM, Leader of the Opposition, Secretary General and other members who are usually present in the Parliament House. The students highlighted various issues like price rise, unemployment, devalue of Indian rupee, increasing NPA of banks, slowdown of the economy and China’s anti-India policies. Ayushman Bharat remained the hot issue of debate and discussion in the House.

As many as 44 teams from various colleges and universities of the country, that are divided in seven groups, compete with each other to lift the final trophy of the National Youth Parliament. Notably, DAV College here is the only college who has lifted the winning trophy for three times — in the 10th, 11th and 14th National Youth Parliament. Besides, the college also managed to clinch the first runners-up trophy in the 13th National Youth Parliament. — TNS
