Agrarian crisis has deepened in state: Farmers

JALANDHAR: A year has passed, when farmers in Doaba protested for sugarcane dues, but the problem stands as it is. Last year the protest was started on December 4 and ended on December 6.

A year has passed, when farmers in Doaba protested for sugarcane dues, but the problem stands as it is. Last year the protest was started on December 4 and ended on December 6. Farmers shared their plight and said because of the problem, they were suffering a lot. Several farmers who have not got their dues are unable to get medicines for their family members, some want to send their children abroad and the rest of them dealing with other personal issues.

A farmer from a village, near Phagwara, said he was awaiting his dues and in such a situation, it become difficult to do other important works. “My father remains ill and I am already short of money. You already know the amount that one got spend on the medicines and since I have not got my dues, it has become so difficult to arrange for money and my father’s medicine, I am feeling so helpless,” he said.

“My son has completed Class XII and I don’t want my son to come into agriculture sector or even remain in the country,” said another farmer.

“I want my son to send abroad where his works will be acknowledged. But in the absence of money, I am unable to send him there,” he added. — TNS
