Rapist gets 7-year in jail

A rape convict was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment on Wednesday. The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Priya Sood also fined Varinder, the convict, Rs 1 lakh. If he fails to pay the fine, he will have to serve three more months in jail.

The rape victim had complained that Varinder, a resident of Basant Vihar, got her phone number from someone about six years ago and started making phone calls. They developed friendship and the accused later raped her several times, promising to marry her, she had alleged. Later, when she pressed for marriage, the convict said he had to go abroad and would marry her after his return. Later, he got married to someone else, following which she filed a case against him. — OC
