Cash-strapped civic body to sell prime properties

The Municipal Corporation is going to present a proposal at the upcoming House meeting to sell its prime properties worth crores at three locations in the city. Sources said the proposal would be presented before House on February 4.

It was learnt that the MC had the plans to sell its land measuring 10,130 sq yd land at Prem Nagar, near Nehru Rose Garden. The sources said the property was linked by four roads. Besides, the civic body also plans to sell a commercial property of 653 sq yards at Jamalpur Awana on Chandigarh Road.

The MC is also planning to sell its commercial site measuring about 268 sq yd near Kailash Cinema Chowk. It will sell these properties through an open auction.

A councillor said: “The civic body is already struggling to improve its financial condition. Owing to a shortage of funds, many development works have been pending for a long time. The MC will be able to generate a good income by selling these properties located at prime locations. It should also make efforts to ensure the removal of encroachments from its properties which are under illegal possession for a long time.”

According to information, more than 20 proposals would be presented at the meeting. A proposal to provide jobs to the kin of the deceased employees would also be presented before House.

The sources said the Opposition councillors had demanded a discussion during zero hour on the problems faced by people in their respective wards. Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu could not be contacted for his comment.
