A slaughter house model prepared by the Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) displayed at the Pashu Palan Mela could do wonders for those engaged in meat and poultry trade.

At present, byproducts, including feathers, claws etc are discarded by slaughter houses which are picked by dogs and could lead to infection.

“We keep poultry byproducts at 148 degree Celsius which are converted into meat and bone meal that can be used as a diet for various animals, including dogs, pigs etc,” said Dr Manish Chaitlai, Head, Livestock Products Technology.

Dr Chaitlai added that recently a five-day programme on “Hygienic meat production and byproducts utilisation” for butchers, floor level workers of meat industry was organised.

“There is an urgent need for economical utilisation of byproducts for revenue generation and to reduce stress on environment. The indiscrete disposal of byproducts can lead to spread of various infectious diseases, including rabies in dogs,” he said.

Dr Chaitlai said, “Clean meat production is a first step to safeguard health of meat consumers. This programme  can contribute a lot to ‘Swacch Bharat Mission’.”
