Ludhiana, July 12

The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has tightened its noose around the units making polythene bags.

Regular checking in this regard is being conducted by the department.

Chief engineer, PPCB, Ludhiana, said the use of polythene bag was completely banned and these are allowed only for industrial purposes.

“Polythene bags that are manufactured should be of more than 50 microns. These cannot be used for domestic purposes. Only industrial use is allowed that too for packaging. Recently, we conducted raids on 11 units in Ludhiana and the drive will continue,” he said.

If any unit is found manufacturing banned polythene bags, action will be taken against them depending on the gravity of the offence. From imposing fine to cancelling their licence— any action can be taken against them, he said.

When asked about the polythene bags being openly used for carrying groceries and other stuff, Rai said these stores come under the purview of the Municipal Corporation (MC) and very soon they will be launching a drive against them as well in co-operation with the Municipal Corporation.

Although the use of polythene is banned, its violation can be seen openly as people carry vegetables, groceries and other stuff in these bags.
