Judge Loya’s death must be probed at highest levels: Rahul Gandhi

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday aligned himself politically with four rebel Supreme Court judges who raised questions about the allocation of work by Chief Justice of India Deepak Mishra and said the concerns need to be probed at the highest levels in the apex court.

“This is unprecedented. Four SC judges have raised significant questions. These are questions need to be seriously addressed. The SC judges have raised Judge Loya’s death case. This must be probed at the highest levels in the Supreme Court. People trust the legal system. And this trust must be kept,” Gandhi said in a brief statement at AICC headquarters.

Congress demanded an investigation into judge Loya’s death by most senior judges of the Supreme Court and by an independent SIT under them.

“In the matter of assignment of cases established traditions must be followed and selective assignment of cases stopped, Congress officially stated after debating through the day whether to align politically with the issue.”

As Gandhi spoke, top legal luminaries of Congress and former ministers P Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal and Manish Tewari sat in the audience in the party office hall.

Congress however stopped short of accusing the judiciary of favouring the central government, with a senior leader saying: “It’s an evolving situation”.
