The mortal remains of former Delhi Chief Minister Madan Lal Khurana, who passed away after a prolonged illness last evening, were consigned to flames at Nigam Bodh Ghat this afternoon.

Khurana, 82, died around 11 pm at his residence at Kirti Nagar in West Delhi. He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters. His son, Harish Khurana is active in Delhi politics. His second son had died last month.

The mortal remains were kept at Delhi BJP office before being taken to the national BJP office at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg near ITO.

According to Khurana’s last wish, his family donated his eyes to Dadichi Sansthan, said Harish. Khurana served as Chief Minister from 1993 to 1996 and was appointed the Governor of Rajasthan in 2004.

He was executive councillor from 1977-1980, two-term Metropolitan Councillor in Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Member of Parliament twice. He was also president of the Delhi BJP and national vice-president of the BJP.

A family member said Khurana was suffering from a chest infection and fever for the past few days. He had suffered a brain haemorrhage about five years ago and had been ailing since then.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were among those who expressed grief.

“He distinguished himself as a hardworking and people-friendly administrator, both in the Delhi Government and Centre,” Modi tweeted.

Party veteran leader LK Advani and Union Minister Sushma Swaraj paid tributes to the leader.

Lt Governor Anil Baijal and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also expressed grief over Khurana’s death.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his Cabinet colleagues too extended their condolences.
