MP appeals to Chief Justice for speedy trial in 1984 riots

In light of the first conviction in the 1984 riots case by a Delhi Court, former Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPPCC) chief and Rajya Sabha MP Partap Singh Bajwa has urged the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to direct the trial court to speed up hearing in the pending cases.

"The first conviction has come after a long wait of 34 years. Justice delayed is justice denied. It was high time that everyone involved in the riots is brought to book and punished. Many of the victims had already died, waiting for justice," Bajwa said.

The Congress leader said in 2010, he along with MP Ravneet Bittu had met the then Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, seeking constitute a special investigation team (SIT) under the command of the Ministry of Home Affairs to re-examine the CBI report on the basis of which a Delhi court had closed the anti-Sikh riots case, before the cases were reopened.
