Director General of Police Suresh Arora said on Sunday that Additional Director General of Police (Railways) Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota would conduct an inquiry for fixing the criminal responsibility for the Amritsar railway mishap. The DGP was here at a function to mark the 59th Police Commemoration Day.

He said: “There has been negligence on the part of someone and that liability has to be fixed, for which this probe has been ordered.”

He said Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had already ordered a magisterial probe by the Divisional Commissioner, Jalandhar, B Purushartha, who would submit his report within four weeks. He said Sahota would personally conduct the inquiry to ensure that the persons responsible for the mishap could be nailed.

On a question regarding seeking details and profiling of Kashmiri students, Arora said there was no point in questioning the national integrity of any student, especially from Kashmir, by the police. “It is our moral duty to ensure access to quality education to every student from any part of the country,” he said.

He said he had already passed on directions to district police chiefs to have detailed interactions with the students studying in educational institutes and assure them that the police was there to assist them in case of any difficulty.

He said there was no question of alienating students from any part of the country. He said the Additional Director General of Police (Community Policing) Ishwar Singh and Inspector General of Police V Neerja had been appointed as nodal officers to redress the grievances, if any, of the students.
