Chandigarh, January 22

Seven members of a gang of vehicle thieves, including a BCA student, were arrested by the Chandigarh Police that led to the recovery of 34 two-wheelers, including 13 Bullet motorcycles.

A team of the Sector 39 police station, led by Inspector Amanjot Singh, nabbed the suspects, identified as Kavi Singh (21), Hardeep, alias Deep (22), Balihar Singh (19), Sharanjit Singh (19), a BCA first-year student, Shanty Kumar (19), and Baljinder Singh, alias Happy, while planning a robbery. The seventh suspect, Azadvinder Singh, alias Harman, was arrested later.

UT SSP Nilambari Jagdale said the miscreants were nabbed while planning to rob a petrol station in Sector 39 on January 20. They were riding six stolen Bullet motorcycles. “Their interrogation revealed that they were involved in vehicle thefts. On their disclosure, 34 two-wheelers, that were dumped in different parts of the city, were recovered,” the SSP said.

The police said the suspects used to steal two-wheelers and sell these at throw-away prices in villages in various parts of Punjab, including Patiala, Khanna, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib and Mohali. “The suspects used to take a large part of the amount from the buyers after promising them that the NOC to get the vehicle transferred would be provided later after which they would take the remaining amount,” the SSP said.

Among the recovered two-wheelers, 13 were parked in a forest area at Sector 40 and seven each were parked in Sector 55 and Sector 56.

During interrogation, the suspects disclosed that they had stolen around 70 two-wheelers of which almost half were sold to gullible people.

A case has been registered against the suspects at the Sector 39 police station.

Police informer turns thief

Investigations revealed that Kavi Singh of Bhagomajra village earlier worked as an auto driver. Once his girlfriend’s father complained against him at a police station in Mohali. Although the matter was resolved, he befriended the cops and turned their informer. He used to inform the police about drug suppliers. Kavi used to get an incentive for informing the police.

Later, to make easy money, he constituted a gang to steal two-wheelers.
