Chandigarh: The Punjab and Chandigarh Journalists’ Union raised a voice in the favour of the freedom of the press during a protest at Sector 17 on Saturday.



Chandigarh: The Punjab and Chandigarh Journalists’ Union raised a voice in the favour of the freedom of the press during a protest at Sector 17 on Saturday. They said around 220 journalists had been attacked in Telengana since 2014, resulting in deaths in several cases. They said despite being the fourth pillar of the democracy, efforts were on to muzzle their voice. TNS

Two held for snatching

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Police claimed to have solved a case of snatching that took place in Sector 22 on July 21. Two youths, including a juvenile, have been arrested. A motorcycle, mobile phone and a purse have been recovered. One of the accused has been identified as Varun Chaudhary (21), a resident of Sector 12. While the minor was sent to a juvenile home, the police obtained a one-day remand of Chaudhary, who revealed that in 2015, he was arrested in four snatching cases in Chandigarh. He further confessed that along with the juvenile, committed snatchings on a blue Pulsar motorcycle till July. They claimed to have committed three snatchings in Chandigarh and one in Phase VI, Mohali. The claims are being verified. TNS

Direct flight to Lucknow

Mohali: Jet Airways started a direct flight from the Chandigarh international airport to Lucknow. The flight took off at 2.45 pm following a brief inaugural ceremony. The function was attended by senior officials of Jet Airways. Officials of the Airport Authority of India and Inspector HS Bal, Station House Officer of the airport police station, were also present on the occasion. “It’s a daily flight. We received a good response. As many as 61 passengers boarded the flight,” said officials of the Jet Airways. The airlines also started its new flight to Delhi, which took off at 4.05 pm. TNS
