Chandigarh, March 2

The municipal corporation (MC) today started the work of strengthening the tertiary treated water supply system in the city with an estimated budget of Rs 71.58 crore.

Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Banwarilal Purohit formally started the work in the presence of Mayor Kuldeep Kumar and other officials.

Addressing the gathering, Purohit said the project would prove to be a boon for the conservation of drinking water as by treating and supplying nearly about 20 MGD of tertiary treated water to the city, potable water used for irrigation purposes would be saved.

He said it was worth noting that all six sewage treatment plants (STPs) had been upgraded with sequencing batch reactor (SBR) technology by the Smart City Mission, resulting in a considerable improvement in the quality of tertiary treated water which will eliminate public complaints of foul smell.

The Mayor said under the initiative, all parks, green belts, road berms and roundabouts in the city would be irrigated with treated water. Furthermore, upon successful completion of the project, the recycled water would also be supplied to industrial units in the Industrial Area.

MC Commissioner Anindita Mitra said previously, tertiary treated water was supplied solely from the STP Diggian. However, after the completion of the project, treated water would be supplied from the STPs in Raipur Kalan, 3BRD and Maloya, in addition to the STP at Diggian.
