Joyride turns fatal for birthday boy

CHANDIGARH: An 18-year-old youth, who was going for a joyride to celebrate his birthday, lost his life after the scooter on which he was riding pillion hit the road divider near the Sector 19/27/20/30 chowk during the wee hours of today.

An 18-year-old youth, who was going for a joyride to celebrate his birthday, lost his life after the scooter on which he was riding pillion hit the road divider near the Sector 19/27/20/30 chowk during the wee hours of today. His friend was injured in the accident.

According to the police, the complainant, Vishal, a resident of Sector 30, reported that he, along with his 12-year-old friend and Bittu (18), was going to celebrate Bittu’s birthday around 3.30 am. They were triple-riding an Activa scooter. The police said Vishal stated that he was dropped near the Sector 20/30 light point after which Bittu and his friend drove towards the Sector 19/27/20/30 chowk. They drove on the wrong side of the road and hit the divider.

Both victims were rushed to the PGI, where Bittu succumbed to his injuries. Bittu’s postmortem was conducted and the body handed over to his kin. A case under Sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 26 police station against the deceased's friend, who was driving the scooter.
