Lalru, August 4

A youth was killed while the pillion rider was seriously injured in an SUV-motorcycle collision near Alamgir village on the Ambala-Chandigarh road last night. The deceased has been identified as Mahinder Singh Dutta (21).

Sat Prakash Sharma (also 21) was critically injured and is undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh. The duo hailed from Bihar and were living in a rented accommodation at Shakti Nagar, Dera Bassi.

The speeding SUV driver, Jaspreet Singh, alias Jassi, a resident of Gulabgarh Road, Dera Bassi, fled the spot.

The police have registered a case against him under Sections 279, 337, 304A and 427 of the IPC at the Lalru police station.

The body of the deceased has been handed over to his kin after a postmortem.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Gaurav Sharma said the victims, diploma students at Longowal Polytechnic College, Dera Bassi, were returning home after meeting their acquaintances at Dream House flats on Sitarpur Road near Lalru. A speeding vehicle coming on the main road from the Ambala side collided head-on with a mobike near Alamgir village, he said. — TNS
