Bathinda, February 19

The Central University of Punjab (CUP) on Tuesday organised the opening ceremony of its 7th annual sports and athletics meet on the premises here. Students from all departments participated in the event and registered themselves to participate in various games.

Before starting the programme, Vice-Chancellor Prof RK Kohli urged everyone to observe a 2-minute silence to pay tribute to the Pulwama martyrs.

The event began with the flag-hosting ceremony and the declaration of the opening of 7th sports and athletic meet by the Vice-Chancellor. He inaugurated the meet by releasing balloons in the air. After taking the salute from the impressive march past, Prof RK Kohli lit the torch and passed it to students.

In his presidential address, the Vice-Chancellor encouraged youngsters to play at least one sport a day and participate in all the events. He mentioned sports inculcated discipline in one’s life, prepared the player to face challenges and played a constructive role in his life.

Registrar Prof Jagdeep Singh communicated his best wishes to participants and advised that students taking an active part in games could go astray.

In the inaugural ceremony, 50m (girls) and 100m (boys) races were conducted. Josphina, Parikshita and Pritika came first, second and third in the Girls Heats. Baljinder, Deepak and Faizal emerged first, second and third in the Boys Heats. The winners were awarded the gold, silver and bronze medals. Students exhibited their mettle and sportsmanship while competing in various events.

The two-day sports meet will conclude on February 20 and will include various sporting events like 100m, 200m and 400m races, shot put, discus throw, long jump, etc. The sports committee at CUPB will organise various fun activities like back race and three-leg race for students, faculty and staff members.
