In what may be termed as a major relief for Sector 21 residents, the Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) has finally decided to shift 20-year-old labour colony, also known as Madrasi Colony, located between Sector 21 and Maheshpur village.

The matter was taken up at a meeting between the Panchkula administration and Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA). Only those persons would be shifted to Ashiana flats, who were found eligible in a survey conducted in September 2009. Houses of those persons whose names do not appear in the survey conducted by the administration will be demolished.

Eligible persons will be shifted to 102 vacant Ashiana flats located in Sector 20, 26, 28 and Abhaypur village in Industrial Area, Phase I. Regular meetings were held between the administration and HUDA as sector residents had been complaining about problems arising due to Madrasi Colony.

HUDA had also conducted a survey to find market price of the land available with it. Later, the government agency had decided to shift people from the colony.

Residents had complained to the HSVP about problems they faced from people staying at Madrasi Colony. According to information, HUDA had already prepared a list of vacant flats in Ashiana. After shifting residents, who were living in the colony since 1998, plots would be demarcated at the vacant site.

Most residents, who were natives of Madras, had come to Panchkula in search of livelihood and had been working here as road construction workers and gardeners.

After demolition of Madrasi Colony situated between Sector 21 and Haripur village, HUDA will get 8.5 acres on which it will cut 14 marla and one kanal plots, which will be put to auction after developing the area.

Estate Officer (EO) Mamta Sharma said the superintendent branch was directed to issue letter at a meeting held recently. Under the plan allotment as well as the possession letters would be issued simultaneously, which was delaying the process of allotment of flats to slum dwellers, the EO added.
