The plying of heavy vehicles on Sahnewal over bridge has robbed the residents of their peace of mind. Although the entry of heavy vehicles from 8 am to 8 pm is banned, these still keep plying on the road. This has become a major cause of traffic congestion in Sahnewal town. Despite repeated pleas and complaints, the problem still persists.

“While the trucks have a field day on the single main market road of Sahnewal, other vehicles remain stranded. We really regret having urged the government to provide a permanent solution to our problem of level crossing at Sahnewal by constructing a flyover,” rued Habans Singh Sains of Sahnewal.

“The multi-axle trucks have till date resulted in a number of major and minor incidents due to their huge size. Moreover, the speed at which they cross the Sahnewal chowk gives many a chill in the spine. We appreciate the move of the police to place the dividers which have eased the traffic problem to a considerable extent but till the entry of big vehicles is not banned once and for all, the problem shall continue. Sometimes even a five-minute run gets extended upto hours because of traffic snarls.

“It is ridiculous that rather than imposing stringent check at the entry point, the traffic police remain busy in clearing the rush at the chowk which sometimes takes hours to normalise,” expressed a nearby shopkeeper.

Zone-4 traffic in-charge Kulwant Singh Malhi said, “I have deployed a policeman permanently at the place but we feel that it is not enough. We are short of manpower. Moreover, the road where we divert the traffic is in a poor state. The tyres of trucks blast when they take to the diverted road.”
