Chandigarh, October 28

Striker Sanjay and midfielder Maninder Singh scored a brace each as Sri Guru Gobind Singh (SGGS) Club, Sector 26, drubbed Ropar Hawks Club 7-2 in the opening match of the 48th SN Vohra’s All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Sector 42 Sports Complex here today.

Both the teams started off at a fast pace, but it were SGGS boys who drew the first blood after Sanjay helped the side gain a penalty stroke in the 19th minute, and converted it successfully.

However, Ropar Hawks drew level in the very next minute with Suraj Kumar’s field goal.

Seven minute later, Sanjay was up to the task once again, dribbling past the Hawks’ defence to make it 2-1 for SGGS Club.

The side held the slender lead till Suraj came to the rescue of his team in the 40th minute. Suraj was heading straight towards the goal mouth but was wrongly tackled by an SGGS defender and referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty stroke to the Hawks.

Lovejeet latched on to the opportunity and helped Hawks restore the parity once again.

SGGS boys were though quick to respond as they found their third goal in the 41st with the help of Diljeet.

Leading 3-2, SGGS boys upped the ante and scored through Amandeep (49th), Maninder (50th, 54th) and Sahibjeet (59th) to seal the match 7-2.

Tomorrow, EME will face Hockey Patiala in the first match, while SGGS Club will take on Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the second fixture of the day. Latter in the day, Chandigarh XI will start their campaign against Northern Railways.
