Ludhiana, January 22

Over a week after an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Sukhpal Singh Sukha, who had shot her woman friend at her house in Sector 32, Chandigarh Road, was finally arrested by the city police.

The police also recovered .32 bore revolver along with 26 live cartridges and a Creta car from the suspect.

Police Commissioner (CP) Rakesh Agrawal, ADCP Ajinder Singh and ACP (East) Davinder Chaudhary addressed a press conference on the matter here today.

The CP said on January 14, the ASI, who had relations with the woman from years, had gone to her house and asked her to give him money as he wanted to buy a new car. When the woman refused, the ASI fired two shots from his official weapon at the victim one of which hit in her stomach, the CP added. After the incident, the suspect himself took the woman to a private hospital and even deposited Rs 2 lakh for her treatment, the CP said.

The suspect had also threatened the woman not to reveal his name to the police else, he would kill her children, the CP added. On the other side the suspect also threatened victim’s children not to reveal anything to the police else, he would kill their mother, the CP said.

The matter came to notice of the Jamalpur police when the hospital authorities sent information next morning.

A SIT was formed in the case to nab the suspect, who was arrested from Beeja village, where he was hiding at his relative’s house, the CP added.

After committing the crime, the suspect left for some religious places and came back to Beeja village only two days ago, said sources.

The ASI had called his friend for some help, who reportedly informed the police, which helped the arrest of the suspect, maintained the sources. The CP has already given the ASI a forced retirement from the Police Department.
