Shelly Oberoi, the Mayor of the AAP-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), has written a letter to the MCD Commissioner, urging the expeditious initiation of the “de-sealing” process for shops in Local Shopping Complex (LSC) markets. A resolution was recently passed by the Mayor in the House meetings, emphasising the need for de-sealing shops.

The impetus for this action stems from a judicial committee’s order dated October 18, 2023, directing the MCD to de-seal shops in specified markets. The committee explicitly stated, “First floor and the second floor in the markets shall be de-sealed forthwith. Such basements sealed due to commercial or professional activity shall be de-sealed upon applications filed by the owners.”

Oberoi highlighted the commissioner’s role in executing proposals and resolutions passed in the House. She expressed concern over delays, citing the commissioner’s filing of a special leave petition (SLP), despite two House announcements on December 18 and January 17.

Deputy Mayor Aaley Mohammad Iqbal emphasised the supreme authority of the House and the commissioner’s responsibility. He lamented the alleged procrastination in the de-sealing process, pointing out the commissioner’s failure to act on resolutions.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Raja Iqbal Singh, accused the AAP-led MCD of shifting blame on to MC officials. He criticised the party for writing letters instead of directly engaging with the Secretary, highlighting a communication gap.

Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor alleged that the AAP-led MCD was avoiding desealing to evade refunds owed to the LSC traders.
