Chamba, February 19
A fresh spell of snowfall has disrupted normal life in the picturesque region of Pangi in Chamba, blocking roads and snapping power supply in remote villages. The heavy snowfall curtailed the activities of the locals forcing them to stay indoors. According to the reports, the high-altitude areas of the landlocked valley were experiencing heavy snowfall since Sunday night.
Known for its stunning landscapes and rugged terrain, the landlocked valley wears a blanket of snow, leaving 42 of the 77 roads blocked for traffic. The traffic to the valley from the rest of the state has been halted.
Residents are facing difficulty in commuting and accessing essential services due to the snow accumulation. Local authorities have issued advisories, cautioning residents against unnecessary travel and urging them to stay indoors unless necessary.
The inclement weather has also disrupted power supply in several areas, adding to the challenges faced by residents. According to the Emergency Operations Cell of the State Disaster Management, 76 electricity transformers have been disrupted in the valley. Residents in several villages are left without electricity for heating and basic amenities in the sub-zero temperature.
Plummeting temperatures have resulted in bursting of water pipes in high-altitude villages, forcing the locals to melt snow to meet the water requirements for daily needs.
Meanwhile, efforts are being made to restore electricity and ensure uninterrupted power supply to the affected areas.
