Manali-Leh highway closed beyond Solang

The Manali-Leh highway remained blocked to normal traffic beyond Solang Nala towards Keylong today because of heavy snowfall. It has been snowing heavily in Manali and Lahaul region since last evening, which has rendered several roads blocked.

Tourists elated

  • Fresh snowfall in Manali and its nearby places has delighted tourists and local tourism stakeholders
  • A large number of tourists rushed to Solang valley beyond Manali to enjoy snow activities there
  • Elated at fresh snow, hoteliers of Manali are expecting an improved tourist footfall in the coming days

Heavy snowfall was witnessed near Atal tunnel on this highway which has blocked a majority of roads in Lahaul and Udaipur subdivision of Lahaul and Spiti district. The snowfall has forced the district administration of Lahaul and Spiti to declare closure of all educational institutions, including anganwadis, for two days on February 20 and 21 in view of public safety. Deputy Commissioner Lahaul and Spiti Rahul Kumar issued an order in this regard today.

The Deputy Commissioner said the Border Roads Organisation has engaged its workforce and machinery to clear snow on the Manali-Leh highway, while the Public Works Department is working to restore rural link roads to traffic.

The DC stated that PWD, Jal Shakti Department and HP State Electricity Board authorities have been directed to intensify restoration work, where roads are blocked and water supply and power supplies are disrupted. He has advised people to avoid any unnecessary travel within the district and from outside the district to Lahaul valley.

Fresh snowfall in Manali and its nearby places has delighted tourists and local tourism stakeholders. A large number of tourists rushed to Solang valley beyond Manali to enjoy snow activities.
