32-year-old man commits suicide

Jalandhar: A 32-year-old man committed suicide at his residence in Red Rose Colony near Khurla Khingra here on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Arun Kumar. The police said the victim hanged himself after his wife left him on Wednesday due to his habit of drinking and constant quarrelling with him. SHO, Police Division 7, Naveen Pal, said the victim committed suicide in the midnight after his wife went to her house. In the double-storey building, Arun was staying alone on the second floor. He used to run his sports goods business from his house and his parents told the police that he was under depression for the past few months as he was suffering losses in his business. The victim is survived by his wife, two children and parents. TNS

New DC inspects tehsil complex

Phagwara: In her first maiden official visit to the town on Wednesday, newly appointed Deputy Commissioner Deepti Uppal inspected Tehsil Complex, record room, under-construction roads and bridges. Later, she chaired a meeting with officials of the district administration. She discussed implementation of social welfare schemes with ADC Gurmit Singh Multani and SDM Gurvir Singh Johal. The DC also visited Rihana Jattan village and inspected the progress of a mega food park. OC

Mobile phone, cash snatched

Phagwara: Two unidentified motorcyclists snatched a bag containing Rs 3,000 and a mobile phone from a woman, identified as Sonam Gupta, from near a medical store in the local Hargobind Nagar locality on Thursday. The suspects managed to escape. The police have registered a case. OC

Workers to lock factory gate today

Jalandhar: The protest by activists of the Jagatjit Industries Democratic Workers’ Union entered its sixth day on Thursday. About 30 to 50 odd workers are protesting amid rain and chilly weather. They said they would lock the main gate of Hamira factory on Friday. Kashmir Singh Ghugshore, Avtar Singh Tari, state secretary of the Indian Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU), and Gurpreet Singh Cheeda, a leader of Dashmesh Fauj Rangretta Dal, said they were demanding hike in salaries and bonusdue to inflation. The activists said owner of Jagatjit industries had failed to implemented their various demands such as 50 per cent increase in existing salaries and end of the contractual system. They said On November 15, factory gates were closed when workers were protesting. They said the closed gates had not been opened, hitting work and their livelihood. They said action should also be taken for disruption of the workers’ protest on December 20. TNS
