Nawanshahr, June 19

A few days ago, a case of an NRI betraying his wife had come to the fore. Everyday cases of women getting harassed (mentally and physically) by their in-laws and husbands clearly shows that despite several debates, discussions and movements, much work needs to be done on the ground.

Three different cases from Nawanshahr have once again exposed that patriarchy is still deep-rooted in society and crime against women is still happening. Out of the three cases, two are from Nawanshahr city and the other is from Sadar area in Nawanshahr.

In the first case, a woman has accused her husband Harwinder Singh and his family of harassing her and demanding dowry even when her family had given them so much in dowry. “My father could not even afford to give them gold ornaments, but he did with much difficulty. Despite this, my in-laws would beat me up and one day after they beat me up for hours, I felt unconscious after which my parents took me to hospital. And it was after three days that I was discharged from there and after that I was advised bed rest for about a month. I want justice,” wrote the woman in a complaint to the police. The family allegedly denied to return the jewellery given by her father.

A case under Sections 406 and 498-A, IPC, has been registered against her in-laws.

In another case, a woman who had been married since 2007 has lodged a complaint against her husband Sukhwinder Singh alleging that he was harassing her mentally and also beat her up often. Now, she is also living with her parents. A case under Sections 489-A and 323 (for voluntarily causing hurt) of the IPC has been registered.

Investigating officer (IO) Jaswinder Singh said notices had been sent to both the accused. “A 15-day notice is sent to the accused in such cases and then action is taken. Investigation is on,” he said.

In the third case, a woman of Sadar area (Nawanshahr) complained to the police that her husband Jatinder Singh was subjecting her to mental trauma and she was disturbed. A case under Sections 406 and 498-A of the IPC has been registered against the accused.

As per information, the woman had told the police about this problem a few years ago too, but a settlement was made then. In the complaint, the woman stated that even after settlement (razinama) was done, the family did not change but continued troubling her. “Even after years, I have got no justice,” she mentioned.
