Process for filing nominations from Dec 15

JALANDHAR: Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma said today that in the wake of the elections in the 882 panchayats in the district, model code of conduct has come into force immediately and it would be in force till the completion of the electoral process.

Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma said today that in the wake of the elections in the 882 panchayats in the district, model code of conduct has come into force immediately and it would be in force till the completion of the electoral process.

He said the process for filing the nominations would commence on December 15 and December 19 would be the last date for the same.

Sharma said the nomination papers would be scrutinised on December 20 while the date for withdrawal of the nominations would be December 21 which would also be the date for allotting the election symbols to candidates.

The Deputy Commissioner said the voting would be held on December 30 from 8 am till 4 pm and the counting of votes would be held on the same day.

Sharma said the district administration would set up around 1,200 polling booths during the elections and adequate staff would be deputed to conduct the poll.

He said the expenditure limit for a candidate contesting for the post of sarpanch had been fixed at Rs 30,000, whereas the limit for those contesting for the post of panch had been fixed at Rs 20,000.

The Deputy Commissioner said the district administration had already fully geared up to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections in the district.

He said the model code of conduct for these elections would be enforced in a true spirit and manner. The District Electoral Officers-cum-Deputy Commissioners and the police were authorised to initiate prosecution against the violation of this code before the Competent Criminal Courts under intimation to the State Election Commissioner, he added.
