When ladies tee off

Gone are the days when golf belonged exclusively to the rich and retired, who spent unearthly hours teeing off. A given day and Chandigarh Golf Club has almost a full house - men and women, boys and girls — claiming their fair space under the sun. And no, the only reason for this leisurely rich pursuit is not that the entry fee is high. We catch up with some women in love with the game.

Pure passion

Lakhmehar Pardesi started accompanying her dad to the golf course to pass time post her school; before she knew... she was in love with the game. Rain or sunshine, she is only too happy to keep the company of her father and golf. She had her stint with basketball, but golf is what she loves the most. “What I love is its all between you and the ball — a never-ending challenge,” says the girl. Tiger Woods and Michelle Wie remain her idols, for all the hardwork they put in the game. “Woods is most fearless person on the field, and somehow Michelle knows exactly the right thing to be done with the ball,” says this 19-year-old.

Bonding over the game

For management consultant Sukhmani Kaur, who was an avid runner, golf has become the perfect partner. For her, golf course is the ideal place to catch up with friends. Her coffee with friends comes with a game. “Bonding over a game is way better than any random coffee shop,” smiles the girl, who is happy spending her weekends amongst the greens.

Family time

Dr Mehar Dhillon finds the golf greens the perfect setting to spend time with her dad and brothers. The family often bets and heads for treats post a good game —obviously the loser treats. “Unlike what it looks like, golf is one exhilarating game. The thrill of that perfect shot is something I look forward to after the super-hectic days at the hospital.”

Dream run

For Pragya Sharma, it’s her father’s lost dream to become a boxer that she somehow wants to fulfil by being a winner at the game of golf. “My father introduced golf to me and I absolutely love it. Most of all, walking the lovely green with all your co-players is amazing,” she says.

Inculcating patience

A random article on parenting that mentioned golf is one good way to inculcate patience in your children made Deepika Handa pick up her golf bag. “The consideration for other players is a good quality to imbibe.” A teacher, she loves to lead by example and is happy that her husband is all-supportive of her new hobby.

Natural course

Mona Dahiya calls golf her husband’s second wife. Only she is also getting addicted to it! “To begin with, I would follow my husband hoping to spend some time together,” she candidly admits. Two years on, she has made new friends and is happy participating in ladies’ championships. “I love golf as one can bond with like-minded people and also with nature. There is something therapeutic about it.”
