Ludhiana, February 1

The body of a Sikh man was found under suspicious circumstances in Dunedin suburb of Pine Hill in New Zealand on Monday. He was suspected to be murdered by slitting the throat.

The deceased has been identified as 27-year-old Gurjit Singh, a native of Pamal village in Ludhiana. Pall of gloom descended on the village.

Gurjit went to New Zealand on a student visa in 2015. He was the only brother of three elder sisters. Six months ago, he got married in Punjab. His wife was about to leave for New Zealand and her flight was scheduled on February 6.

As per information, the deceased’s wife had been calling Gurjit on Monday but he was not responding. Later when his wife called Gurjit’s friend and sent him to the victim’s house to inquire, he (friend) was shocked to see that Gurjit was lying in a pool of blood at his house. Afterwards, he informed the NŽ police.

Gurjit had recently took a house where his body was found. He was planning to settle with his wife in that country. However, two weeks ago, he had expressed suspicion that someone had entered the house.

Nishan Singh, the deceased’s father, said since Gurjit’s wife was about to move to New Zealand to settle there with her husband and our family was also in a celebration mood. But the news of his son’s death has shattered the dreams of our family.

“My son had worked hard in New Zealand. After completing his studies, he had set up his business of optic fibre cables. He had huge plans to become a successful entrepreneur in New Zealand but everything is gone now,” he said.

Kin to visit NZ to fight case

Sources said the deceased’s father was in touch with district administration officials to bring the body of his son to India to perform his last rites. He was also planning to visit New Zealand to fight the murder case of his son so that perpetrators could be punished.
