Jarkhar Sports Festival from Feb 10 to 12

Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Charitable Trust, Jarkhar, will organise the annual sports festival, popularly known as Modern Rural Mini-Olympics at Jarkhar village on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla road, near here, from February 10 to 12.

This was announced by the members of the organising trust after its meeting today. Members led by chief sewadar Bhai Surjit Singh Sahnewal and chairman Narinder Pal Singh Sidhu paid obeisance at Gurdwara Manji Sahib.

Sidhu said the main feature of this year’s festival, would be hockey (boys and girls), kabaddi (one village open) with three outside players, kabaddi (72-kg), volleyball (shooting), basketball (girls) and cycling besides other regular games.

Jagdeep Singh Kahlon and inspector Balbir Singh, secretaries, said eight teams would be vying for top honours in the Mata Sahib Kaur Gold Cup Hockey Competition.

The winners in hockey (junior and women) would be given cash prizes worth Rs2 lakh by Mohinder Partap Singh Grewal, while the position holders in kabaddi would be given cash prizes of an equal amount by sports promoter Amolak Singh Ghakhal, brothers and Gold Gym, respectively.

Avon Cycles has decided to distribute 72 bicycles among top four volleyball teams and winners in some other events, said Kahlon.

Advocate Harkamal Singh, president of the Trust, said Ravneet Singh Bittu, MP from Ludhiana, would declare the festival open on February 10 and Kuldeep Singh Vaid, MLA, Gill constituency would preside over the opening ceremony.

Famous Punjabi artists Ranjit Bawa and Manmohan Waris would entertain the spectators on the concluding day.

For outstanding contributions in their respective fields, famous Punjabi singer, Kamal Heer, film stars Hobby Dhaliwal and Binu Dhillon, hockey Olympian Akashdeep Singh would be among other prominent personalities felicitated on the final day of the festival, said chief organiser, Jagroop Singh Jarkhar.
