Majority of seats in Cong kitty at Jagraon Block

LUDHIANA: Congress candidates won a majority of seats in Jagraon, Mullanpur Dakha and Sidhwan Bet blocks of Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections.

Congress candidates won a majority of seats in Jagraon, Mullanpur Dakha and Sidhwan Bet blocks of Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections.

The rain that continued throughout the day failed to dampen the spirit of the workers of parties. A large number of supporters of candidates remained present outside the counting centres despite heavy rain.

Of a total of 24 zones of Jagraon, the Congress candidates won in 18 zones and the SAD in two zones. Independent candidates emerged winners in the remaining four zones.

In Jagraon block, Gurcharan Singh of the Congress won by defeating SAD candidate Shinder Singh with a margin of 597 votes. Uttam Singh of the Congress won from Ramghar Bhullar by defeating SAD candidate Nirmal Singh by 509 votes. In Gurusar Kaunke zone, Rajpal of the Congress emerged winner by defeating Avtar Singh of the SAD by a huge margin of 869 votes.

Jiwan Singh of the Congress defeated Surinder Singh of the SAD by 580 votes in Lodhiwal zone whereas Balwinder Kaur of the Congress defeated Sukhwinder Kaur of the SAD by 459 votes from Hathur zone. In Lakkha zone, Kamaljeet Kaur of the Congress won by 119 votes from Gurmail Kaur of the SAD. However, Congress candidate Paramjit Kaur lost to Baljinder Kaur of the SAD by 287 votes in Dalla zone. In Sherpur Khurd zone, Kuldeep Kaur of SAD emerged winner against Congress candidate Paramjit Kaur by 176 votes.

Kamaljeet Kaur of the Congress won from Rasulpur zone by defeating SAD candidate Kamaljit Kaur by 152 votes. Balwinder Kaur of the Congress won from Jagraon Pati Malak by defeating Charanjit Kaur of the SAD with a margin of 447 votes. Harpreet Kaur of the Congress won from Mallha zone by defeating Independent Jaswinder Kaur by 47 votes. In Manuke zone, Independent candidate Karamjit Kaur defeated Manjeet Kaur of the Congress by 776 votes.

Congress candidates also registered victories in Galib Khurd, Galib Kalan, Sidhwan Khurd, Agwar Rahlan, Kakkar, Malseehan Bajan and Chimna zones. In Dehraka zone, Independent candidate Surjit Singh defeated Jasveer Singh of the SAD by 71 votes. Independent Harbans Singh won from Amarghar Kaler zone by defeating Sukhdev Singh of the Congress by 30 votes. Independent Joginder Singh won from Chakar zone by defeating Nath Das of the Congress by 876 votes.
