Kolkata, January 27

The West Bengal Assembly on Monday passed a resolution against Citizenship (Amendment) Act brought by the Central government. The contentious law must be repealed forthwith and the National Population Register (NPR) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) must also be rolled back, demanded the resolution.

This makes Bengal the fourth state to pass a resolution against the law. Similar resolutions have already been passed by Left-ruled Kerala and Congress-ruled Punjab and Rajasthan.

CM Mamata Banerjee said the CAA was “against the Constitution and humanity”. “We want this law to be repealed immediately. We want the NPR to be repealed too,” Mamata said. The CM said the ongoing protest against the CAA was not only of minorities. — TNS
