A 33-year-old Mev community man, who was carrying six bovines in a vehicle, was found murdered in the Govindgarh area of Alwar district on November 10. His family on Sunday alleged he was shot dead.

The deceased has been identified as Umar, a resident of Mev-dominated Ghatmika village under Pahari police station of Bharatpur district.

After identifying Umar’s body last night, his family today filed an FIR with the Govindgarh police alleging he was shot dead by some assailants while he was in a vehicle.

A case under IPC’s sections, including 302 (murder), has been lodged and the matter is under probe, Alwar CO Anil Beniwal said.

The body was sent for postmortem to Jaipur today after the family’s consent.

On November 10, the police had received information about an abandoned vehicle in Ramgarh area road. Umar's body was found near railway track, away from vehicle, ADGP (Law and Order) NRK Reddy said.

The police brought the body to police station for identification.

Two others who were accompanying Umar were also wounded and suffered bullet injuries. Both have been admitted to a hospital in Haryana's Rewari.

ADGP Reddy said the police were informed about the incident by villagers. Police will contact the injured in Haryana, he added.

Another case under the Rajasthan Bovine Act was also lodged yesterday. After identification of the victim the case under IPC was lodged.

A pal of gloom descended on Umar’s village Ghatmika where 95 per cent population is of Mev community, SHO Mukesh Singh said.

Senior police officers in Alwar district and police headquarters in Jaipur are tightlipped on whether Umar was a victim of “cow vigilantism” or was there any other reason behind his death.

On April 1, one Pehlu Khan was allegedly beaten to death when 15 persons allegedly transporting cows in a mini-truck were assaulted by cow vigilantes on the Haryana border near Behrod.

In September, Rajasthan Police gave a clean chit to six persons in the Pehlu Khan case as the state CID-Crime branch investigation found “no evidence” against them.
