New Delhi, July 4

The Rajya Sabha today unanimously passed the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2019, with the Opposition members notifying the government that they were allowing the legislation sail through under protest.

The Bill, which had been cleared on Tuesday by the LS, provides for supersession of the Medical Council of India (MCI) for two years with effect from September 26, 2018. It replaces the ordinance promulgated for the second time on February 21. Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said the MCI had failed to deliver and also there was a perception that it had become a den of corruption. The Bill also proposes to increase the number of members in the Board of Governors to 12 from existing seven. — TNS
